A Mama’s Hands

Recently my son Ryne and his wife Haley joined with Michelle and me to celebrate a homecoming at a church that I had previously pastored. Of course my beautiful grandchildren Aiden and Amelia were there with us also. As we were all sitting in the pew together during the song part of the service, I observed the way that my daughter in love Haley managed the two grandchildren ages 4 and 2. (Now 10 and 8) It was truly amazing to watch.

Haley is a great mother and a loving person. She also keeps kids during the week so sometimes he has as many as four to five kids total to take care of. I observed her as she first of all dealt with an active 2 year old in Amelia. Haley would with one hand hold onto Amelia’s wrist to keep her from wandering off. With the other hand she would provide whatever Amelia or Aiden may need to keep them occupied.

If she wasn’t using the free hand to provide for the kids then she was using it to provide protection and padding on the songbook rack of the pew ahead of us so that when one or both of the kids, who were occasionally playing on the floor, would lean up they would not bump their heads. She also was using the free hand to look at the bulletin or her watch or whatever was necessary. She did all of this so seamlessly that it seems like she had three or four hands. I can only imagine what it is like when she is keeping four or five corralled.

As I watched Haley in amazement it occurred to me that God has given Mom’s special hands that are like His in many ways. These hands are there to protect us, provide for us, correct us, guide us, comfort us, pick us up when we are down, and the list goes on and on. What is even more special about a Mom’s hands is that they are attached to a loving, caring heart. A Mom, like God our Father, does all of these things for us because they love and care for us.

So today I say thank you to all moms who have poured out your heart and hands to your children as well as your husband and family. I thank God also for using His hands to guide and protect me. In love with Jesus – Gary Mimbs
