 A New Name & A New Character

One of the blessings of my ministry occurred this past year. An older man whose daughter had gotten saved in our church started attending our church. I had visited him and his wife and daughter at their home a few times. The man was something of a character and when he started attending church regular no one in town could believe that he was going to church.

I could see the Holy Spirit working in his life as many Sundays he was under conviction but just wouldn’t take that first step toward the altar. Every week I would go by the pew that he sat in and pray over it that Christ would break in and that he would move to the altar and be saved.

One Sunday morning at the end of the sermon I saw him step out and come to the altar. As I led him in the sinner’s prayer there were tears flowing and people who had been praying for him
rejoicing.

When I announced the Sunday that he would be baptized there were at least 20 extra people in our services because most were in shock and many said that if HE could get saved then anybody could get saved.

Since his conversion, this man has been hungry for the things of God and reads the Bible like you would not believe. He is faithful to attend, tithe, and witness to others about his conversion. At his age and considering his past, his transformation is a miracle in that everyone can see a changed man.

Fast forward many months. Our church was having a joint event with another church. Several people from the other church knew this man who had been saved. He happened to drive by the event that morning. One teenager from the other church said to me, “Why didn’t Mr. Bag come to this?”  I asked him who he was talking about as that was not the name of the man who got saved. The teen said, “All my life my family has called that man Mr. Scumbag. Since he got saved and Jesus is changing him, I now call him Mr. Bag.”   Wow what a testimony that even a teenager can see.

The Bible tells us that Christians are given a new name reflecting the new creation that they have become in Christ. Instead of being called scumbag, lowlife, drunk, drug addict, adulterer, etc we are now called Christians – little Christ. This also carries with it the idea that our character now changes so that our lives reflect our new name.

The Bible reminds us in Galatians 5:17, “If any man is in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things have become new.” What a great promise that no matter what name people call you today that reflects your sin – you can be given a new name and a new way of life.
