How Big Is God?
I recently accompanied my wife on a business trip to Savannah, GA. We were staying in a major hotel right across from River Street. When we got to the room and looked out of the window one of those huge cargo-sized container-carrying ships was going up the river right outside of our room. Even though we were on the 14th floor of the hotel the ship was taller than our room. It was also about 1000 yards long.
As I looked at the ship the men working on deck looked like small toy-sized figures. The sheer mass and size of the ship were overwhelming. Each of these ships can carry hundreds of cargo containers that are the size of an 18-wheeler trailer. Yet despite the size of these ships, if you fly over one of these ships while it is at sea it looks like a dot on the huge ocean.
When I think about this perspective it shows me how immeasurable God really is. From Heaven above where God resides, the biggest ship or buildings that we can make look like a speck. So, we humans must look like an atom on a speck. YET He chooses to know us intimately. He not only sees us but knows everything about us. He knows every cell, molecule, bone, and even the number of hairs on our heads. We are NOT just a speck – we are His children if we are saved.
God desires more than a long-distance relationship with us. He wants us to know Him so badly that He sends the Holy Spirit to live inside of us. He is not a “far off” impersonal god. He is an intimate Father to His children and He wants us to know that He cares for us in every detail of our lives.
So just like when I saw the size of the huge cargo container ship up close it overwhelmed me, when we see God up close at work in our heart – it should overwhelm us. We should realize that He is bigger than our planet and even the universe that HE created. And yet He is as close to us as a simple prayer. In Love with Jesus – Gary Mimbs
