Playing Hide & Seek With God.
I was reading again the story of Adam & Eve in the Garden of Eden. (Genesis 3:1-13). After Adam and Eve sin their eyes are opened and they realize that they have sinned so they sewed together some fig leaves to try and cover themselves. Then they hear God coming and they try to hide from Him. God called out to them, “Where are you?” It wasn’t that He didn’t know where they were- He wanted them to realize where they were. They were now hiding from Him in a state of shame and broken fellowship. Sin will do that to you everytime.
Fast forward till today. The same loving God wants to have fellowship with us yet we still follow the sinful nature that Adam and Eve have passed down to us and we sin. When the same serpent (Devil) tempts us we fall for the lie just like Adam and Eve did. We, like them, do our own thing and not what God had told us to do or not do.
God asks us the same question that He asked them – “Where are you?” And just like He knew exactly where Adam &Eve were, He knows exactly where you and I are. Not just physically but more importantly SPIRITUALLY. You cannot hide from God.
So when we are confronted by God, we try to hide like Adam and Eve did. First when we realize that we have sin by disobeying God, we try to cover up our sin. They used fig leaves. Our “fig leaves” are trying to look all righteous, playing church, and living in a hypocritical way not taking our sins seriously. We even try to hide by using our busyness with the things of the world, to not spend time with God. He didn’t accept Adam & Eves man-made coverings for sin and He won’t accept ours.
When they confessed to Him why they had disobeyed Him, He made them coverings of animal skins. The animal skins represented the shedding of blood for the covering of their sin. Today our man made attempts will not work because the Bible tells us, “Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin” Praise God that the blood that Jesus shed on the cross at Calvary covers the sins of the whole world.
But we have to stop trying to hide from God and confess our sin for Jesus’ blood sacrifice to be in effect. Not only does the blood of Jesus Christ cover and cleanse our sin, it sets us free from the shame and guilt of the sin. So stop trying to play Hide & Seek: with God. You will never win the game in the end and if you play it long enough it can cause you to lose your soul.
