Shallow Or Deep?
Once I was trying to help someone out by allowing their son to cut my mom’s grass. The dad wanted to teach the son responsibility and I needed someone to cut the grass as I live an hour away from her. We worked out a deal where I would pay the young man to use my mower and cut the grass and I would pay him for his labor.
His dad came and helped him get started the first time and supervised while the young man cut the lawn. It was a good job and all seemed to be fine. The next time that it needed to be cut the young man came on his own and proceeded to cut the grass. He “cut” the grass but there was only one problem. He forgot to let the mower deck down.
So even though he drove the mower all over the grass all he did was knock down the tallest grass but he really didn’t cut the grass the way that it needed to be cut. When I pointed it out to him and his dad, we laughed and chalked it up to his getting experience as he now had to recut the grass with the mower deck down.
In life God wants us to not just stay on the surface level with Him but to go deeper. It is not enough to just take care of the issues that are sticking up the highest. He wants us to go deeper and deal with the things that are causing the issues in our life. It is not enough for us just to go through the motions and not really make any progress in our spiritual development.
Many people are content to have a surface-level relationship with God and just get by. They call on Him only when the issues of life start to get too tall for them to handle but they never seek Him to deal with the real problem – our sinful nature. This leads to frustration and wondering why we aren’t making any progress.
I Corinthians 2:10 says that “The (Holy) Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.” God has so much more spiritual blessings and joy for us than just a surface relationship with Him. He wants us to go deep into His Word, the Bible. He wants us to allow the Holy Spirit to go deep into our hearts and minds to make us new creations.
When you start to seek the deeper things of God through your relationship with Him you discover the highest level of His blessings, joy, peace, and comfort. It doesn’t change the world around you but it changes your perspective of the world around you. It now empowers you to be a difference-maker in the world around you. You will never achieve this by staying on the surface with God and just going through the motions. Go deeper and experience the joy of your salvation and the perfect peace that comes with that special intimate relationship with Him.
Someone once told me that, “You have as much of Jesus as you want. You will never want more than He can provide – so keep on seeking Him”
