Thankful For Grace
I recently met a great Christian businessman in our community. He invited me to come and tour his business and join several other people for what he called a “football lunch” He always has a lot of people out for lunch on the Friday when the big rivalry game between Fitzgerald and Irwin County takes place. So I decided to go and get to know some more people in the community.
Since this company owner Tim said it was a “football lunch” and I always wear one of my GA Bulldawg shirts on Fridays during the season I put on one of my red GA shirts and headed out to the lunch. Imagine my surprise when I walked into the breakroom where the lunch was to be held and everyone there (about 25 people) all had on Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes shirts. They all looked at my red shirt (Red is the color of arch rival Irwin County) and gasped like a traitor had invaded the lunch.
I know that my face turned as red as my shirt as I realized that when Tim had invited me to the “football” lunch it was a FITZGERALD football lunch – not just a lunch for any other team. I quickly pointed to the big “G” on my shirt and told everyone that it was for the GEORGIA BULLDOGS not Irwin County. A few people still wanted to skin me alive.
Tim, being the great Christian brother that he is, stepped in and said something like, “Okay guys Gary didn’t know so we are going to show him some grace today. Besides we most all pull for GA Bulldogs also so we will let him slide this time. But in the future don’t wear a red shirt on rivalry day”. They all smiled and allowed me to eat with them since Tim had interceded for me. Now every time that I go to Tim’s business I wear a purple shirt. For me to go back with a red shirt would be to abuse the grace that was shown to me.
There are so many times in life that we do the wrong thing. Sometimes it is just a mistake and other times it is plain out wilful sin. I am so glad that when I confess that the thing that I did was wrong I have someone to intercede for me. I am so glad that Jesus is my intercessor. He is also the dispenser of grace even when I don’t deserve it. I John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins God is faithful to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness”. So if you mess up or just flat sin confess it and count on the mercy and grace of God. But also do your best to not do that thing again.
