I was riding down the road listening to some music. When I can’t find a Christian station to listen to, my default is the oldies. I guess that I like the oldies because I am old. Growing up in the 6o’s and 70’s the music of those eras still brings back good memories for me.
As I was listening to an oldies station I heard the song, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” that was one of the first hits for the band U2. As I listened to the song the Holy Spirit spoke to me about the true meaning of the song. The song goes through a list of things that the person has tried in trying to find peace and satisfaction but the result is always the same – they still haven’t found what they are looking for to make them happy and complete.
The answer is that they are looking for a peace that can only be found in having a relationship with Jesus. Inside of each of us is a God shaped hole that needs to be filled. We were created to have fellowship with God but sin separates us from that perfect union with Him. The only way to fill the void and have perfect peace is by accepting the sacrifice for our sins that Jesus paid on the cross.
We know that the void is there and that we are missing something but we look to fill that void in all the wrong places with all of the wrong things. We try sex, money, drugs, alcohol, power, self-help and all of the world’s other “solutions” but NONE of them will satisfy. Only God can fill a God shaped hole. The Bible promises in Isaiah 26:3 “God will keep in perfect peace all those who trust in him, whose thoughts turn often to the Lord!”.
Proverbs 19: 23 declares, “The fear of the Lord leads to life, and whoever has it rests satisfied; he will not be visited by harm.” So if you want to find what you are looking for – Seek God. Seek His perfect peace, love, and mercy. NOTHING else will ever satisfy the longing of your heart.
His Word also promises in Psalm 37:4, “Delight yourself also in the LORD and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” Stop looking for love in all the wrong places and surrender to the only one who loves you more than you can ever imagine.
