When No One Is Watching…”

When You Don’t Know That People See You…”

There is a quote that says “Character is what you do when no one is watching” I had this ring home for me recently. One morning I was going to pray with the students at the middle school. As I approached the entrance to the school, I could see through the cafeteria windows the students eating breakfast. As I was watching I saw one of the students from our church youth group approaching a table with his breakfast tray in his hands. I watched as he sat down at a table by himself and then he bowed his head and prayed.

This really shocked me as he is one of our teens that gives us some problems. He is a good kid but he lives in a rough neighborhood. He is a different person when he is around the “tough – thug type” kids at school. So thus, he gives his parents, teachers, and our youth workers some challenges because of his different behavior that he demonstrates versus the kind, sweet kid that he really is.

He didn’t know that I could see him and he didn’t do it to impress anyone else as there was no one around him. If anyone had been around, he probably would not have prayed so that anyone could see him. I sought him out after the prayer with the other students and in private told him how proud I was of him.

Later that morning I went to an organization where I get to pray with all the workers. I came in through a rear door and was facing many of the workers. One worker whom I was standing right behind was having a conversation with the person in front of them. The conversation was laced with profanity. The person whom he was talking to was trying to signal him that I was right behind him.

He finally turned around and saw me and his conversation changed. He asked me to forgive him as he was just expressing himself after having a bad day. I assured him that I wasn’t offended. I told him that he needed to ask God to forgive him as HE was the one who would judge him. I showed him my rock in my pocket and explained the story from John 8 where Jesus said that only those who had never sinned were qualified to judge someone. and that I wasn’t qualified to judge him.

We all need to realize that God is watching us all the time – even when there is no one else around. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 12:14, “God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad.” And in Psalm 90:8, “You have placed our iniquities before You, Our secret sins in the light of Your presence.”

God is watching us not so that He can slam us for our sin but to convict us of our sin so that we will ask for forgiveness. God loves us enough to send the Holy Spirit to convict us so that He will not have to judge our sin. When our sin is confessed it is forgiven, our heart and minds are cleansed, and the sin is forgotten by God – never to be brought up again.

So why not live every moment as if God was standing behind you and watching and listening to you? Also as if he knew your every secret thought. You may say that is hard to do. Not if you surrender your will and allow the Holy Spirit to control all of you – your thoughts, actions, reactions. It becomes easy to let HIM live through you. It is the only way that we can fulfil I Peter 1:16, “Be holy as I (God) am holy.”
